Introduction
To provide support to landcare groups and help maintain the momentum of the landcare movement Landcare Coordinators have been appointed in each State and the Northern Territory under the NLP. In addition the NLP is providing funding for community landcare coordinators to assist groups to engage in landcare and sustainable resource use activities at the local or catchment level.
These arrangements provide a platform for the Landcare movement to build on its already significant achievements and to move forward in conjunction with the regional NRM arrangements. The State Landcare Coordinators assist the movement to find new ways of better targeting efforts to meet regional priorities, particularly where funding from government programs is included in the investment mix. The opportunity exists to link the existing Landcare movement with further industry participation in NRM at the national, regional and local levels, along with the many other enterprise focus groups that are actively examining and promoting sustainable NRM practices.
There is also the potential to draw on the expertise of industry in the examination and setting of practical and achievable regional NRM targets at both national and regional levels and in developing programs to meet these targets.Responsibilities
The role of the State Landcare Coordinators includes:- Providing information on how to access NLP funding.
- Promoting the achievements, activities and opportunities of Landcare.
- Providing support, information and direction regarding sustainable resource management for the Landcare and volunteer movement.
- Promoting community, industry and government partnerships in managing our natural resources.
Relationship with the Natural Heritage Trust and National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality NRM Facilitators
A number of facilitators have been engaged at regional and state level supported from the Natural Heritage Trust.
The Australian Government state level NRM Facilitators support and communicate Australian Government policies, programs and priorities, in relation to the Natural Heritage Trust and the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality, engage relevant government, industry and community stakeholders in relation to one of the four broad NRM themes. The Regional NRM Facilitators assist each regional body to ensure there is effective community and broader stakeholder involvement in developing and implementing regional plans. They are also a source of information on government policies and resources within each region (for example, in relation to the Australian Government Envirofund), and coordinate the facilitator and coordinator network.
The State Landcare Coordinators complement the NRM Facilitators by focusing on and encouraging further industry participation in sustainable natural resource management initiatives.
