Technical Market Access Program

The TMAP works to establish, improve and maintain market access for Australian agricultural and food products. It does this through activities such as

  • technical discussions and negotiations on sanitary and phytosanitary (animal and plant health) issues in key export markets
  • developing new import protocols
  • preparing submissions to support Australian food exports, and
  • engaging with key importing agencies to facilitate market access.

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry administers the TMAP as part of the National Food Industry Strategy (NFIS) managed by NFIS Ltd. The program has two main elements:

  • technical representatives (Agriculture Counsellors) based in Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo, and
  • Canberra-based technical specialists who help develop and pursue technical market access cases.

Industry-government market access committees guide the TMAP's market priorities. These committees comprise industry and government representatives and generally constitute the principal consultative forums between the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and the industry, e.g. horticulture, dairy, meat and seafood, on export certification, market access and quarantine issues.
