Asia Pacific Forestry Skills and Capacity Building Program

What does the program involve?

The Asia Pacific Forestry Skills and Capacity Building Program will provide up to $15.8 million over four years to assist countries in the Asia Pacific region to increase their forest management expertise and improve the carbon sequestration performance of their forests.

It is recognised globally that many countries need assistance to achieve sustainable forest management. As forest management standards vary considerably across the region, Australia can assist Asia Pacific countries to improve professional capacity in sustainable forest management, restoration of degraded forests and reducing the impacts of forest fires.

How will it help reduce greenhouse emissions?

The program will improve capacity for sustainable forest management in the Asia Pacific region. This in turn will improve forest management practices, maximise carbon retention rates and improve carbon capture in regenerating forests.

This Program is part of the International Forest Carbon Initiative, which is a key component of Australia's international leadership on reducing emissions from deforestation.

Projects funded under the first phase of the Program

The first round of the Program closed in December 2007. An excellent response was received with 79 Expressions of Interest submitted from around the world. All Expressions of Interest were competitively assessed by a panel of relevant government departments including DAFF, the Department of Climate Change and the Australian Agency for International Development.

A total of 18 projects, with a combined value of $2.3 million, will be funded under the first phase of the Program. Contractual arrangements are currently in place for the following projects:
