The Fisheries Resources Research Fund

The Australian Government established the FRRF in 1991 as a component of the 1989 policy statement, New Directions for Commonwealth Fisheries Management in the 1990s. The FRRF has an annual appropriation of approximately $3 million. Its major role is to provide funding for:

  • a rolling program of assessments of all Commonwealth fisheries undertaken by the ABARE and  BRS
  • targeted biological, economic and social research to underpin the Government’s response to current and emerging fishery policy and management issues.

Beginning in 2008/09, the government has committed an additional $4.4 million over the next three years through the Fisheries Research Program to expand research commissioned by the FRRF and in particular the fisheries related work undertaken by ABARE and BRS. The Fisheries Research Program will further underpin policy to ensure Commonwealth fisheries are profitable and managed for long-term sustainability.

Advice for applicants

External applicants seeking funding are advised against submitting applications direct to the FRRF. Researchers are advised to submit their applications to the Fisheries Research Advisory Bodies, Resource Assessment Groups or Scientific Committee of the fishery relevant to their research.

Information on the FRRF, its investment priorities and project details can be found in the FRRF annual reports.
