What is Fishing Community Assistance?
In recognition that significant changes are needed to secure the future of Commonwealth-managed fisheries, the Australian Government provided $20 million to help fishing communities manage the impacts of reduced fishing activity.
Which communities were eligible?
Communities that handle fish caught in Commonwealth-managed fisheries were eligible to apply for funding under Fishing Community Assistance.
Who was able to apply?
To be eligible for Fishing Community Assistance you must have been a:
- Private enterprise business
- Cooperative
- Local government body
- Community group or council
- Non-departmental government agency or non-profit organisation
What types of projects?
Fishing Community Assistance funded projects that demonstrated a contribution to the economic or employment opportunities in their community, such as:
- adding value to existing resources, products or a business
- creating sustainable new economic/employment opportunities
- diversifying skills
Applications for Fishing Community Assistance were competitive with successful applications demonstrating a benefit to the community.
