What is Fishing Community Assistance?

In recognition that significant changes are needed to secure the future of Commonwealth-managed fisheries, the Australian Government provided $20 million to help fishing communities manage the impacts of reduced fishing activity.

Which communities were eligible?

Communities that handle fish caught in Commonwealth-managed fisheries were eligible to apply for funding under Fishing Community Assistance. 

Who was able to apply?

To be eligible for Fishing Community Assistance you must have been a:

  • Private enterprise business
  • Cooperative
  • Local government body
  • Community group or council
  • Non-departmental government agency or non-profit organisation

What types of projects?

Fishing Community Assistance funded projects that demonstrated a contribution to the economic or employment opportunities in their community, such as:

  • adding value to existing resources, products or a business
  • creating sustainable new economic/employment opportunities
  • diversifying skills

Applications for Fishing Community Assistance were competitive with successful applications demonstrating a benefit to the community.
