Agriculture is one of the most technically and scientifically adventurous sectors in the economy. Science is a key contributor to the prosperity and sustainability of Australia’s rural industries and communities.

BRS provides the scientific advice that delivers better decisions by Government and better outcomes for rural industries and communities.

Quality, independent scientific information and advice is crucial to:

  • manage salinity and water resources in agricultural lands
  • develop policy for safe and effective use of biotechnology in agriculture
  • manage drought and adapt to climate change
  • understand social factors to develop rural policy and assess its impacts
  • sustainable management of forests, land, water and fish
  • manage pests and weeds and their impact on agriculture and the environment

BRS works at the interface between science and rural policy in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, natural resources (salinity, landscape, water), social and regional issues. BRS collaborates with State and other Commonwealth government agencies to ensure the most up to date advice is available to decision makers.

Through its multidisciplinary team of scientists, BRS provides scientific advice, analysis, assessments, spatial information, predictive models and scenarios to enhance the Australian Government’s capacity to develop and implement rural policy.

BRS produces an extensive range of products and services such as interactive CD-Roms, computer-based databases, maps and decision support systems, interactive internet sites, seminars and Science For Decision Makers briefs (reviews on topical scientific issues).

This brochure outlines key areas BRS will deliver advice on for its clients in 2007, together with examples of its recent work.

The Bureau of Rural Sciences Capability Statement is available from the BRS shop and online.
