The Scheme: Empty Container Scheme

The Empty Container Scheme allows accredited persons at Quarantine Approved Premises, through the assessment of International Repositioned Empty Containers, to:

  • verify cleanliness,
  • undertake the subsequent cleaning and disposal, and/or
  • referral to AQIS of quarantine material found inside the containers.

Accredited persons are able to inspect international repositioned empty containers without the need for AQIS to examine each container. The scheme provides for accredited persons to assess the container for quarantine concerns, and, on the basis of that assessment, record the level that relates to releasing the container, removing the contamination or contacting AQIS for intervention.
