Importing Biological Products and Foodstufs
The importation of some products is, by law, subject to certain quarantine conditions. These conditions are outlined in the AQIS Import Conditions Database (ICON). Australia's quarantine policy is based on risk assessment and management of the potential introduction of exotic pests or diseases. AQIS manages the risk associated with imported products in various ways. Some products have been assessed as posing significant risk and are not allowed entry into Australia. Other products are only allowed into Australia if accompanied by an Import Permit.
How to import biological commodities:
- Check ICON for current quarantine import conditions.
- If ICON states that an Import Permit is required, complete and submit a permit application.
- If ICON states that an Import Permit is not required, ensure that all other conditions are adhered to.
- For clearance of imported goods, all relevant paperwork (permits and/or other documentation as detailed on ICON) must be submitted to the AQIS regional office in the state/territory of import.
Detained Goods (mail, air courier, passenger luggage):
If AQIS has not released your goods, it could be for several reasons. It may be that an Import Permit and/or other documentation is required, or the product may be required to undergo post-entry treatment. If in doubt, check ICON for current import conditions.
- If you require information on mailing items to Australia, please refer to the International Mail section of the AQIS website.
- If you require information about importing goods as air passenger luggage, please refer to the Airports section of the AQIS website.
- If you are unsure as to why your goods have been held, please contact your local AQIS Office to request clarification. When you do so, please ensure you have a reference to your consignment (eg. Quarantine Entry number, seizure number).
