Progression and Implementation of the Strategy
Expected Outcomes
The implementation of the AAWS is expected to:
- provide governments and stakeholders with a clear and consistent framework that they can use to define national animal welfare standards
- lead to a more informed community that will help to reach agreement on ways to manage animal welfare that are consistent with community expectations, and
- raise international awareness of Australia's responsible approach to animal welfare that will strengthen Australia's position as a world leader.
Priorities
Priorities in implementing the strategy are to:
- establish an AAWS Advisory Committee
- prepare a national implementation plan, with specific action plans for the six key animal sectors
- develop a communication plan to increase community awareness and recognition of the importance of sound animal welfare standards and practices
- achieve consistency of Australian animal welfare requirements, based on national and international benchmarks, and scientific evaluation and research, and
- establish new national reporting and monitoring systems for animal welfare.
The AAWS Implementation Plan
The Plan was developed by the AAWS Advisory Committee with assistance from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and other high level stakeholders at a workshop in September, 2005.
The plan is to be endorsed following further consultation with stakeholder groups. Workshop participants also endorsed the establishment of working groups and suggested membership for the six key animal sector working groups.
Action plans for each of the six key animal sectors will be developed by the relevant working groups, in consultation with key stakeholders and the Australian community. The action plans will spell out who is responsible for putting these plans into effect. They will also outline the main components, such as resources, funding, national coordination, and monitoring and evaluation of progress.
