Quota administration: What we do

The Quota Administration Unit collects export data for statistical purposes and manages 23 quota controlled markets.

The Department of Agriculture Fisheries & Forestry (DAFF) assumed responsibility for the red meat quotas in July 1997 following the closure of the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation.

DAFF, in conjunction with Dairy Australia and the Dairy Industry, assumed responsibility of dairy World Trade Organisation (WTO) quota controlled markets in 2004 & Free Trade Agreement (FTA) quota controlled markets in 2005.

We collect the data that you see on this website for commercial and government use. The data we use is supplied by the Request for Permits (RFP’s) that you send into AQIS. AQIS send onto us all the information you give to them. We then process this information and determine whether a Quota Certificate is needed.

If a Red Meat quota or FTA Dairy certificate is needed two things happen:

  1. We use the RFP to obtain the information for the Certificate by completing an Approval and issuing an approval number. A facsimile of this information is sent to you to check to ensure that the information we have is correct and complete.
  2. Using the Approval number we then compile and print a Quota Certificate. The Certificate not only shows the Approval number but also a Certificate number. A duplicate copy is kept for our records and you receive the Original and two duplicates of the certificate.

If a WTO Dairy Quota Certificate is required for the EU the AQIS office in your region will issue the certificate with information received by us. An approval should be issued from this office before an IMA1 or IMA1(UK) can be signed. If you require one of these certificates please contact us on (02) 6272 4492.

A Quota Certificate only needs to be completed for those destinations and meat or cheese types mentioned above AND a Quota Certificate can only be issued to those exporters that have an ENTITLEMENT account balance to cover the RFP kilograms.
