Australia’s Farming Future is one of the Australian Government’s key initiatives for primary industries. It provides $130 million over four years to help primary producers adapt and respond to climate change.
Australia’s climate is changing over time and this can be seen in the differences we are experiencing in rainfall, temperature and extreme events. Climate change is global and challenges how we go about farming.
Our primary industries face unique challenges in a changing climate and could face a broad range of repercussions. There may be physical impacts (e.g. changing rainfall patterns), social impacts (e.g. changes to farm business structures, community demographics, health outcomes and wellbeing) and economic impacts (e.g. changing productivity levels and markets).
There are also unique opportunities available to primary producers in adapting to a changing climate.
The objective of Australia’s Farming Future is to equip primary producers to adapt and adjust to the impacts of climate change.
The initiative comprises three components which support research and development projects, communication and awareness activities, training, advice and assistance for those who choose to leave farming:
- Climate Change Adaptation Partnerships Program - to increase our understanding of climate change impacts and improve on-farm preparedness
- Climate Change and Productivity Research Program - to undertake research on managing emissions and adaptation
- Climate Change Adjustment Program - to provide primary producers with professional advice, training and adjustment assistance.
The new FarmReady program will help industry and primary producers access the specialised training that can help them deal with the impacts of climate change.
Farmers wishing to access the Climate Change Adjustment Program Advice and Training Grant must initially meet the income and assets test administered by Centrelink. Farmers who are deemed eligible for assistance are required to undertake a Farm Financial Assessment with a Prescribed Adviser, which includes the completion of the Farm Financial Assessment/Primary Filter template below;
