Federal Court decision on pig meat
16 September 2005
DAFF05/6D
The Full Bench of the Federal Court has today upheld an appeal by Australia’s Director of Quarantine against an earlier Court judgement affecting the importation of pig meat into Australia.
The Director of Animal and Plant Quarantine, Joanna Hewitt, said today: “The decision validates conditions recommended by Biosecurity Australia for imported pig meat.”
“I understand that the effect of the Court’s decision is to reinstate the pig meat import permit set aside as a result of the earlier decision of the Court. Other permits continue to remain unaffected.
“The Court process has highlighted that the import risk analysis process is complex and some aspects are not always easily understood.
“For this reason the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will examine issues raised in the Court proceedings to better work with industry and other stakeholders in the future to improve communications and engagement.”
“Australia remains committed to rigorous science-based assessments of the quarantine risks associated with potential imports to protect Australia’s important agricultural industries.”
