Cape York gardeners can help fight new weeds
17 March 2008
Residents living in four communities on Cape York can help Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services (AQIS) scientists search for new plant diseases and weeds during a survey starting at the end of March.
As part of the AQIS Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy a plant health team will be visiting the Weipa township, and the Aurukun, Napranum and Mapoon communities between 30 March and 4 April 2008.
The AQIS team consists of a plant pathologist, entomologist and a botanist who will be looking for plant diseases, insect pests and new weeds.
The team will be examining people’s gardens with special interest in plants like bananas, sugarcane and citrus trees.
If people are aware of any new plants, pests or diseases in their gardens and would like to arrange a visit from the team or ask questions about exotic species they can contact the AQIS Weipa office on 4069 7380
