The department aims to foster agriculture, fisheries, food and forestry industries that are more competitive, self-reliant and innovative. We strive to ensure natural resources are sustainably managed and accessed. We support our primary industries with scientific advice and economic research, promote their increased access to markets, and help protect them from diseases.

Working in partnership across governments, nations, trading partners and industry sectors, we view the effective and efficient delivery of our portfolio services and the provision of quality policy advice as our department’s core functions.

We value diversity, recognising that people of different backgrounds, work styles, cultures, perceptions, skills and abilities all combine to give the department an advantage in meeting client needs. The key values we work by are professionalism, integrity, openness, fairness and respect.

Career opportunities with us could include policy and program development, economic and scientific research, and quarantine and inspection.  We encourage you to consider the diversity of employment opportunities offered to graduates of the department when setting out on your career path.

These are exciting and challenging times for Australia’s agriculture and food sectors. By working with the department you can address these challenges and help our primary industries become more competitive, profitable and sustainable.
