Our Graduate Development Program (GDP)

The department is seeking between 40–60 graduates for the 2009 GDP.

If you are successful in obtaining a position, you will start work with us on Monday 19 January 2009.

Development opportunities

Throughout your graduate year you will undertake a structured and comprehensive training and development program. The department’s GDP aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge that will place you in a highly competitive position within the department and the Australian Public Service.

As part of the department’s GDP you will be provided with:

  • A formal induction program that will introduce you to working within the department and the Australian Public Service.
  • A Foundations of Leadership residential.
  • A professional program of competency based training and development.
  • Three diverse and challenging workplace rotations that, where possible, include policy, program and corporate placements and aim to give you a diverse overview of the department.
  • The opportunity to contribute to policy development, program management and corporate management.
  • An industry tour where you will meet with industry representatives.
  • Support from GDP managers, a personal coach, trained supervisors and previous graduates.
  • The opportunity to give and receive feedback on your progress through individual meetings, regular focus groups and monthly group meetings.

Throughout the eleven month program you will have training and development in areas including: 

  •  budget and financial management
  •  foundation of government
  •  leadership training
  •  administrative law
  •  communication (conflict resolution and negotiation, assertiveness, feedback)
  •  policy development
  •  project development and management.
