The branch provides analysis and advice on cross-portfolio policy issues, as well as whole-of-government policy issues affecting the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sector. It also undertakes a wide range of portfolio coordination activities and manages appointments to portfolio boards.

The branch provides a strategic coordination role on biosecurity and quarantine policy and process. It undertakes coordination and policy development in areas that cut across the portfolio including on women, youth and Indigenous. The branch also manages the Ministerial Council and Standing Committee Processes, and supports the department’s Executive Management Team.

The Taskforce has responsibility for developing the Commonwealth's legal position in response to the Equine Influenza Inquiry Report. It also manages the 1800 number published on the DAFF website in relation to general questions on the Report.
Quarantine and Biosecurity Review Secretariat

The secretariat provides policy, technical and administrative support to the panel appointed to undertake an independent review of Australia's biosecurity and quarantine arrangements. The secretariat's role includes drawing together input from the Department and stakeholders, provided via submissions and consultations, and helping the panel prepare its final report. This is due to be provided to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry by 30 September 2008.
