Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS)

Free call from within Australia - 1800 020 504

AQIS provides quarantine inspection for international passengers, cargo, mail, animals, plants, and animal or plant products arriving in Australia. They also inspect and certify a range of agricultural products exported from Australia.

AQIS’s import and export inspection and certification is essential to maintain Australia’s highly favourable animal, plant and human health status and access to export markets. Quarantine controls at Australia’s borders also minimise the risk of exotic pests and diseases to protect Australia’s agriculture industries and environment.

Animal Quarantine
National Manager, Dr Ann McDonald
Ph: +61 2 6272 5917

Animal quarantine applies to all kinds of animals and their products including insects, fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Animals coming into Australia must spend time at specially equipped quarantine stations to ensure they are free of disease before being released. Not all animals are allowed into Australia, as the pest or disease risks associated with their importation may be considered too great.

Plant Quarantine and Biologicals
National Manager, Peter Liehne
Ph: +61 2 6272 3751

All plants or parts of plants such as fruits, seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and wood or bamboo items must be examined and, if necessary, treated by Quarantine officers. Live plants must be kept at plant quarantine stations when they arrive in Australia to make sure they’re not carrying pests or diseases.

Border
National Manager,
Chris Parker
Ph: +61 2 6272 5499

Many countries have pests and diseases that could have disastrous effects on Australia’s animals and plants. These pests and diseases could be carried by people, by animals, in animal products such as meat, in plants, or in plant products such as timber, or in soil on machinery.

All of these must undergo quarantine inspection, and many plants and animals must be isolated at quarantine stations, so any pest or disease risks can be identified and prevented from entering the community.

Cargo Management and Shipping
National Manager, Tim Carlton (A/g)

Ph: +61 2 6272 5058

Passenger and cargo clearance are the main aspects of quarantine control at entry points into Australia. Quarantine officers use a range of techniques including risk assessment, detector dogs, X-ray machines, surveillance, scientific support and inspection at international airports, seaports, mail exchanges, and container depots.
